Why specific gravity matters for glaze application
Specific gravity (SG) measures the ratio of glaze weight to water volume. Maintaining consistent SG prevents glazes from going on too thick (crazing, running, pinholing) or too thin (poor coverage, dull color).
Target SG ranges
- Standard dipping glazes: 1.40 – 1.50
- Spraying glazes: 1.30 – 1.38
- Brush-on glazes: 1.50 – 1.60
